The stage is now set for the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, where England will face Spain on Sunday.

The two semi-finals were all about big moments, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal stealing the spotlight for Spain with his amazing goal against France. Spain had to come from a goal behind and it was Lamine Yamal’s goal that got Spain level before Dani Olmo gave Spain the advantage a few minutes later.

Both goals were great but seeing a player so young with such a high football intelligence is what took all of the headlines. It wasn’t just his goal but everything about his game, from the passing to his decision making. It’s rare to see such a calm and confident head on a player this young, and I’m not sure if we’ve ever seen it to this level at this age since Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene at Everton.

But Lamine Yamal is doing it in the semi-final of an International tournament. It’s important not to put too much pressure on young players but it’s also hard not to talk up a player who is doing these things on the pitch.

In the other semi-final it was my country Holland against England, and the Dutch took an early lead through a great goal from Xavi Simons. After that England dominated a lot of the ball and had a few chances through Foden, but the equaliser came from a Kane penalty, that even many England fans would admit was a controversial decision.

The VAR room asked the referee to take a look and he awarded a penalty for an attempted block that made contact with Kane’s foot after he had shot. It felt like an unfair decision but Kane converted the penalty and the score was 1-1.

Then Depay got injured and the Netherlands started to change their approach by bringing on Veerman. Knowing you still have to attack to win the game, I thought a striker like Broberry or Ziriskee would come on. Koeman didn’t do that and it allowed England to push them back.

When Weghorst came on in the second half the English looked like they had prepared for this before the game. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on the English coaching team must have thought ‘I know their plan’ having played for the Netherlands, knowing Weghorst is strong in the air but if they keep them far away from the box because ‘he will not hurt us on the break’.

The second half was a bit slower as Holland managed to stifle England’s play, but then Ollie Watkins delivered the blow at the end of the 90 minutes to give England a late winner. Watkins was playing non-league football when he was 20 but is now an international hero for his country.

It means England will face Spain on Sunday and it’s a tough one to call. More than anything I hope we get an exciting game and the best team wins!
