Patrick Bamford had scored one Premier League goal before he turned 27. It came in Middlesbrough’s 2-1 defeat against Southampton in 2017, a season which saw Boro relegated to the Championship.
Bamford later joined Leeds to become their most expensive signing since Robbie Fowler in 2001. He has mixed success in his few Championship seasons with Leeds, and when Bielsa brought in Rodrigo from Valencia for a club-record £30m after promotion to the Premier League, most people predicted Bamford would be a solid backup.
But six games into the season Bamford has six goals after starting every game. The only other Leeds player to score six goals in the first six games of the season is Eric Cantona, and his hat-trick against Aston Villa felt like a breakout moment for Bamford, and Leeds as a whole, who are now 5th in the table.
Leeds are known for their tireless work ethic and relentless pressing and we’ve already seen how hard this is to deal with, even for teams like Liverpool and Man City. We need to remember that the 3-0 win against Villa was against the same team that scores 7 against Liverpool two weeks ago, and it was their first defeat this season.
Seeing Leeds then beat Villa shouldn’t be a massive surprise as we know the Premier League has seen some crazy results this season. It’s hard to predict and entertaining to watch, and it will be exciting to see who can build momentum for the New Year. #mmlove
