Every now and again we see a team surprise everyone, including their own fans, with how well they start the new football season. This year Stade Brest is the surprise in Ligue 1, leading the table after six games with a 1-0 win over Lyon at the weekend. Steve Mounie’s 87th-minute goal gave Brest their fourth win from their opening six matches to continue the club’s best-ever start to a Ligue 1 campaign since they were founded in 1950.

The goal put them at the top of the table and there’s a lot of excitement around how well this club can do this season now they have some good momentum.

The fans are full of hope of bettering their best-ever league finish, which came in 1987 when they finished 8th.

The small team from Brittany only spent €500k euros in the summer transfer market, which as we know is not a big amount of money in the top leagues of Europe. Nobody is expecting this team to go on and win the league (although we all know what happened with Leicester) but if they can continue with a good run the hope is they might break their record and finish close to the European places.

Football is a funny game and we never know what to expect, but this is what the game is all about and the unpredictability adds to the excitement. A lot of people will be hoping Brest can continue their run and take on the bigger teams in the league that are used to spending big money to create the best teams.

But whatever happens the fans are enjoying the moment as league leaders! #mmlove
