The Premier League is back again this week, and it could be one of the most competitive seasons ever as even more quality and higher standards are on display across the 20 clubs.
There is excitement at every club as we approach the opening weekend, with players fresh from summer and the possibility of success for every club. Each club will be defining success in different ways, and starting with Man City they are aiming to become the first team to win the Premier League five times in a row. City will be the favourites yet again and for Pep it will be a matter of maintaining the consistency his team has found over recent seasons.
The biggest question is after winning it all including the treble and becoming the first team to win 4 Premier League titles in a row, there is not much left for City to achieve under Pep, and that could leave the window open for another team to beat them to the trophy.
Arsenal came closest in the past two seasons and are hoping for third time lucky with a strengthened squad. It could be their year and the head-to-head with City will be huge.
Liverpool have entered a new chapter under Arne Slot and it will be very interesting to see how they fair. There is normally a period of adjustment needed under a new manager as players adapt to the new system, but we know if you’re going to challenge for the title you can’t ease your way in so they will be aiming to start fast and find early form to take that momentum through the season.
For Man Utd the goal is a return to the Champions League after finishing eighth last season. Ten Hag will be under the microscope again it seems like it will go one of two ways for United. If they can start well you can picture them causing a few surprises but if the start is not great big questions will be being asked yet again.
Chelsea are seeking consistency above all else, and it’s time to start competing for Champions League football. Enzo Marseca has a big job on his hands as new manager, after helping Leicester win promotion back to the Premier League last season. One of the big things we’ll be looking for is a clear identity and direction as a team to help find that consistency.
Newcastle will also be aiming for Champions League football after they struggled with many injuries last season. If they can keep their top players fit it could be a different team we see this season and Eddie Howe will be wanting to keep the pressure on the top and keep building Newcastle’s hopes.
Aston Villa did qualify for the Champions League, and it will be their mission to make an impact in that competition while also qualifying for it again for next season. We have seen time and time again how difficult that can be for teams as strength in depth is needed for the increased volume of games and tough competition in Europe, so it would be a huge achievement if they can match their Premier League success of last season.
There are just a few days to go now and this weekend we will learn some things about what we can expect from each team this season!
