The group stages have come to an end at Euro 2024 and the first round of the knockouts is now in place.
Possibly the biggest shock so far was Georgia’s success in progressing after their 2-0 win over Portugal, which also saw Georges Mikautadze go top scorer in the competition with three goals in three games. Georgia will face Spain in the next round, who have arguably looked like the best team in the competition so far.
Another surprise to many has been Englan’s performances. England have progressed as winners of their group and are unbeaten, but the fans have been unimpressed with the performances which included draws against Denmark and Slovenia. The theme for England has been that they have sat quite deep and not pressed, which we did see start to change slightly in their last group game but it wasn’t enough to excite the fans.
England’s team on paper is possibly the best along with France when you look at the talent at Southgate’s disposal, but performances have felt a bit lacking in creative energy and they have not controlled the game or created chances like you would expect from the players that are usually so creative for their clubs, like Foden, Saka, Palmer, and Bellingham.
We all know England has the talent to get the job done, but the passion is being questioned by the fans.
Southgate knows things need to change and their next match will see them face Slovakia. The fans will be expecting much more from the team so we will see how England fare in a few days.
My country Holland will face Romania in the next round, and that is a country that has been a bit of a surprise package, winning their group on goal difference. Holland finished 3rd in their group behind France and Austria. Koeman was not impressed with his team and how many goals that have been conceded despite having one of the best defensive line-ups in the tournament.
The most important thing is if you are dangerous up front, the defence has less work to do, but if not it is the other way around. That is why I’m happy Depay scored again and showed the danger Holland has in attack.
England and Netherlands are hoping to hit their potential while the likes of Romania, Georgia and Slovakia are focused on causing an upset. Let’s see what happens next!
