There was a huge moment for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this weekend. The club has started the new season incredibly well, leading the table as underdogs and trying to make an even bigger dent on the league than they did last season when they finished 5th.

Union were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2019, and have progressively finished each season since then higher in the league, from 11th, to 7th to 5th. Now they’re aiming even higher and have been leading the table for much of the season.

They had their biggest mental challenge yet this weekend, after Bayern played before them and went ahead in the table, it meant Union were in second place and needed a win to reclaim the lead. That can have an impact on the mentality of the players but they dug so deep in their game against Monchengladbach, scoring a winner in the 97th minute to secure all three points and spark wild celebrations for Urs Fischer’s team.

Fischer has been in charge since 2018 and has overseen their promotion and steady climb up the table. It’s an exciting time at the club and as neutrals it’s also exciting to see the Bundesliga have a shake-up after Bayern’s decade of domination. Bayern are still the favourites to win the title again but a lot of people will be supporting Union Berlin in hope we can see a huge upset like we did with Leicester in the Premier League.

It will be a huge challenge for them but as every week passes they are coping well with whatever is put in front of them. Let’s see how far they can go because the key thing will be keeping the important players fit. #mmlove
