Boos rang around the Tottenham Hotspur stadium at the weekend after conceding a late equaliser against Wolves in the last round of Premier League matches of 2024.
Spurs have now won just three of their last 13 matches in all competitions, which has seen them drop down to the bottom half of the table, in 11th place and 11 points away from the Champions League places, which would surely have been a target at the start of the season.
Ange Postecoglou is coming under increasing pressure as a result. He was applauded for his exciting style of football in his first season in North London, and while we are seeing plenty of goals when Spurs play, results are not going the right way. Spurs have been hit with injuries and Destiny Udogie became the latest to join the list as the ninth unavailable player.
Newcastle had similar injury problems last season and it’s clear that this can have a significant impact on a team’s standing in the Premier League, but Ange needs to find solutions quickly if the season is going to be saved.
Ange said: “We’re dealing with a fair bit and we’re not getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back to allow us to freshen up the team. When we get one back, we lose one.”
On paper it doesn’t get any easier for Spurs, as they host in-form Newcastle next, and North London derby at the Emirates Stadium is also on the horizon. Despite having to make changes to the team, Ange will keep testing the calmness and belief of the Spurs fans as he continues with the attacking football tactics that he has become known for.
Tottenham were in 6th place and only three points behind Chelsea in November after beating Man City 4-0, but they are now closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
The table is tight and a run of form can change a lot – you just have to look at Nottingham Forest to see how that can give you a boost in the standings. That’s exactly what Spurs are hoping for, starting with their tie with Newcastle in the early kick off on Saturday.
