I watched as Jose Mourinho managed his 100th Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, witnessing only his second defeat there with Chelsea.
It certainly wasn’t one of the best performance I’ve seen of Chelsea.
There is something missing, and I’ve said it before – that Chelsea aren’t in perfect balance despite winning the league last season.
Mourinho tried to answer that with Juan Cuadrado, who after an underwhelming initial spell at the Bridge is now determined to get his form back in Italy with Juventus.
Mourinho’s second answer is Pedro. He has all has all the right ingredients to help Chelsea produce more goals from the right. His speed will also help when Chelsea sit deep and play on the counterattack.
I was surprised to see César Azpilicueta subbed against Crystal Palace, but perhaps that was because he was heavily involved in Palace’s first goal, chasing the goalkeeper and losing the energy and focus to clear the ball with a clean tackle.
But the biggest question defensively for Chelsea is will Mourinho bring in further back up for the central defence?
Competition is key within a top team like Chelsea to keep everyone on their toes. The midfield looked a bit flat on Saturday and I felt the energy levels were low. Maybe some players aren’t up to speed yet, but I’m sure Mourinho must see that, and it will be interesting to see what he does next.
Manchester city look like the most balanced team in the league at the moment and Chelsea can’t afford to let the gap get any bigger this early in the season.
