Dortmund have the opportunity to win their first Bundesliga title since 2012 this weekend when they face Mainz on the final day of the season.
Their 3-0 win over Augsburg at the weekend helped them leapfrog Bayern, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to Leipzig on Saturday. They’re now two points ahead of Bayern and have a great chance of denying Munich their 11th successive title.
Bayern travel to Koln on the final day of the season on Saturday but Dortmund know they can secure the title if they win at home to Mainz. If Bayern don’t win, the title will be theirs in any case.
Bayern sacked Julian Nagelsmann in March which was met with some questions from the fans as the side was sitting second in the table and had a good chance of competing for the title. They quickly brought in ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hoping that he could help them lift the title but they will now need to win and hope Dortmund slip up to retain the Bundesliga title.
It was interesting decision from Bayern as the team were still capable of winning the treble when Nagelsmann was sacked. It can take time for a team to work well under a new manager so the timing seemed risky, but they stand by their decision.
Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn said: “The results and the form simply weren’t consistent. We lost a 10-point lead to Dortmund. Just for that, the decision was the right one.”
The title is now out of their hands, and Dortmund have been impressive in recent season with the likes of Jude Bellingham who is expected to make a big-money move to Real Madrid this summer. It would be a perfect exit if his last game would be to help Dortmund lift the German title.
If Bayern don’t win the league I can say before the new season starts Tuchel will be looked at closely to see what he will be doing with a fresh start. For them, the disappointment will ideally lead back to new winning ways, but it could possibly lead to an even bigger setback if they don’t react from the beginning.
This is because the German giants are so used to winning and have always taken the lead in adding new things to their already rich history. They don’t accept anything less than consistent dominance in the German league. #mmlove
