When Conte joined Spurs as manager he did it with the view to win trophies and wanted to be provided with the tools necessary to win with his usual style. He’s the kind of manager that has been very successful with a system and usually sticks to that system. But maybe Spurs then were not the best fit for him, as a club that doesn’t always invest as heavily in top talents to bring in the players the manager wants, like some of the Premier League’s other big clubs.
Chelsea have been in the spotlight due to this in recent transfer windows, where the manager was supplied with the players he wanted and big money was spent. Conte was frustrated about not been given that kind of freedom to buy players and you could start to sense the tension at the club.
Spurs’ key to their team has been to create a young and hungry side without spending the massive fortunes that the likes of Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd are used to spending. Redknapp and Pochettino were instrumental in this development and magic started to happen when Harry Redknapp earned Champions League qualification on 2010.
That saw Redknapp earn the Premier League manager of the Year award and he was only the second manager to win it without being league champions. Pochettino also gave starts to young players like Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier who quickly became a core part of Spurs and the England national team. Then in 2008 he lead them to their first Champions League final, but ultimately lost to Liverpool.
This was Spurs at their recent peak, but Conte’s fallout with the board recently will have felt like a low point even though the club is still battling for top four this season.
We can question if the investment Conte received was not the amount he wanted and it forced him to buy players that weren’t at the top of his wish list. We might only find out the answer to this later.
The key thing for Spurs is to qualify for the Champions League so they can keep their main man Harry Kane happy and try to persuade him to stay another year with the team that many people say has so little to offer a big star like him. #mmlove
