The mood is getting a little bit tense in the Spurs camp after Ange Postecoglou’s side were on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline this weekend.

It’s been a poor run of form for Spurs who have the third-worst form in the league over the last 9 games, winning just one of those matches. They are 15th in the table with 16 games left to play, and that’s a position not many fans would have predicted at the start of the season.

Goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an own-goal from Archie Gray saw Spurs 3-0 down at half-time against 16th-placed Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. Spurs did fight back and earned two goals via Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, but it wasn’t enough and there were loud boos coming from the away end at the final whistle.

Postecoglou does have a lot of injuries to contend with, with Dominic Solanke out with a knee injury, Brennan Johnson with a calf problem and Yves Bissouma out after the North London derby at Arsenal. But there is not much room for excuses at this level and especially at a club with the ambition that Spurs has.

When it comes to adjusting because of the injuries I think the only question for Postecoglou is, why don’t you adapt to the players you have in your team right now. They are young and inexperienced players but you have to keep the confidence in the team by making them play in the way that suits them, instead of making them look and feel more vulnerable like they are currently. There is to much fear in the team around their own goal and that doesn’t help.

When a club dips in form and faces these challenges you can sense the pressure building, and there are already rumours around who Spurs might replace Ange with. For the time being it looks like his job might be safe though, but it won’t be for long if results don’t turn around. The fans are being vocal bout their feelings, with chants of “You’re nothing special, we lose every week” echoing from the away end at Goodison Park at the weekend.

On the brighter side, Spurs do have a 1-0 advantage going into the League Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool in a couple of weeks. Progressing to the final would be a big boost but the league position also needs to change or Daniel Levy will be under increasing pressure to make a change and try to improve Spurs’ fortunes.
