The Women’s World Cup is underway in Australia and New Zealand and we already have some big stories from the competition.

Jennifer Hermoso scored twice and assisted in her 100th international appearance to help Spain beat Zambia 5-0 on Wednesday, a result that put both Spain and Japan into the knockout rounds.

France were held by Jamaica in their opening game which came as a big surprise to many, and there will surely be many more twists and turns to come. But one of the biggest stories is about 18-year-old forward Linda Caicedo, who scored for Colombia on her World Cup debut. 

The goal made her the first player in history to score in three World Cups in one year, as she also scored in the 2022 U17 World Cup and the 2023 U20 World Cup just a month ago. It’s been an amazing year for the Colombian who also signed a contract with Real Madrid, and she is making a case for one of the rising stars of football on and off the field.

Linda made her professional debut when she was 14 years old, and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was 15 but fortunately managed to beat it which makes her story even more inspiring. It seems like there is nothing she can’t overcome and I look forward to seeing her play more and hopefully take Colombia further into the tournament.

The competition is now fully underway as we’ve seen every team play, and Spain have made themselves look like favourites along with USA but as we all know anything can happen in this great tournament. #mmlove
