I had no time to go and see “Straight Outta Compton” until this week, so I made sure to fit it into my schedule. It was nice and refreshing to see the truth behind one of the most influential rap groups of all time. I’m sure the Yo MTV Raps fans will agree with that.

They were the group that rapped about the real things going on in the lives of young black men in America. The film gave me a look into how they were harassed by the police at the time.

But that didn’t take away from the funny moments in the movie. Half of the theatre felt sorry for the almost-naked Felisa, while the other half was cracking up. Ice Cube’s diss “No Vaseline” and their bravery of singing “F*** The Police” in front of the police had me in stitches.

There were plenty of emotional moments too, from the cruelness of their business manager to Eazy E’s illness. This demonstrated that losing someone close to you always puts things in perspective, as keeping up the cool persona no longer mattered.

I also learned a lot about the group. I had no idea Eazy E couldn’t rap before he met the others, but he did an amazing job learning and developing his unique style.

There will always be people trying to take the shine away from a great film, pointing out that they missed a lot of details. But guys, really? It’s a movie, so it has to have a great arc and this one has a great music arc.

It was one of those rare movies that I didn’t want to end, and you can bet I’ll be watching it again soon.
