We’re three days into the World Cup and we’ve already had a huge surprise, with one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Saudi Arabia held on to a 2-1 win over Argentina after coming back from behind. Messi opened the scoring from the spot and Argentina did have three goals ruled out for office, but it was a spectacular 10-minute period from Saudi Arabia that saw them grab two goals and take the lead.
Argentina entered the game on a 36-game unbeaten run that included them winning the 2021 Copa America, and they are one of the favourites to win the World Cup with it likely being Messi’s last too. Few would have backed Saudi Arabia going into the match and when Messi scored from the spot it looked like the game might only head in one direction.
But the Green Falcons fought back and flipped the game on its head with a low shot and another great finish, before defending excellently to give Argentina their first defeat since the 2019 Copa America final against Brazil.
Ghana are the only team at the World Cup that rank lower in FIFA’s rankings than Saudi Arabia and it will go down as one of the biggest shocks in history.
Argentia have it all to do now in their remaining games against Mexico and Poland, while Saudi Arabia could progress with a draw if other results go their way.
But I am still surprised about this result. The Saudis had put a lot of energy into this game, especially looking at the last 20 minutes and how they defended as a whole team. They tried to use every trick in the book in running the time down and maybe played their best game in took the best result, but I am worried they will have lost the energy to perform again like this.
They made Arab countries so proud in achieving this and will receive a trophy when they go back home to Saudi. Let’s see what they do next and if Argentina can overcome this obstacle, because we have seen teams lose their first game then go on to win the tournament. #mmlove
