Burnley are flying in the Championship and even though we’re only halfway through the season, few would bet against the clarets earning promotion back to the Premier League.
They didn’t start the season so fast, only winning two of their opening six games, but Vincent Kompany has got his team firing on all cylinders now and they have one of the best home records in Europe. They have a 100% win record in their last seven home games, and Kompany is becoming one of the most talked about up and coming managers in England.
His first job as a manager was a two-year spell at Anderlecht, the club where he began his playing career. Now at Burnley he has transformed the team and got them playing football that you would not usually associate with the Clarets. They were known for an old school brand of football in recent years, and although that was successful and kept them in the top flight for many seasons, Kompany has brought the flair that he has and experienced at Man City to the club and they now play the best football in the league.
One example is the attacking threat provided by the two full-backs Ian Maatsen who is on loan from Chelsea, and Vitinho who have become the best fullback partnership in the league. The Championship is getting better and better every year, but it’s still not always as attacking as the top flight, but having attack-minded full-backs shows you the philosophy of Kompany and how he likes his side to play.
Kompany also brought Josh Cullen with him from Anderlecht, and he’s been pulling the strings in midfield and commanding games. There’s a long way to go this season but Burnley are 14 points clear of the playoffs and well on their way to automatic promotion. It would be great to see this side in the Premier league under Kompany where he would be tested by the big teams.
This weekend they host Coventry looking to make it eight home wins in a row and further extend their lead at the top of the Championship. #mmlove
