Chelsea travel to Anfield on Sunday in what will be one of the most anticipated games of the weekend in the Premier League.
Liverpool currently sit at the top of the table, although that might change between now and kick-off on Sunday as Man City and Arsenal will both have had chance to add points to their tally, as they play Wolves and Bournemouth respectively. But they have had a great start to the season having conceded just two goals so far, and have 9 wins from their last 10 games in all competitions.
Liverpool’s record against Chelsea has also been good in recent years, as they’re unbeaten in the fixture since 2021. But Chelsea also come into the game strong after a fast start to the new campaign.
Chelsea have scored 16 goals in seven games so far, and the only game they didn’t score was their opening day 2-0 defeat to Man City. Cole Palmer has six of their 16 goals, whilst Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke each have scored four. Cole Palmer is in amazing form and he will be one of the key danger men no doubt, but it’s going to be interesting to see what happens when Chelsea’s free-flowing attacking football meets Liverpool’s tough defence.
Arne Slot has been impressive in his first games as Liverpool manager, seemingly needing no time to adjust to his squad and earning five clean sheets from seven games. The Blues have been unbeaten in the league since under new manager Enzo Maresca too, and the tactics on the day will go a long way to deciding which team will come out on top.
Slot will set his team up so that tactically he will try to stop the flow to Palmer and focus on the connection he has with Jackson. This is a big reason why Liverpool’s midfield will be important in determining how tight the game is, as they try to block the service to Chelsea’s attack.
For Chelsea it will be important that there is understanding amongst the defence because there will be no time for them to have any hiccups, as Liverpool will try to control the pace. I just hope that Chelsea don’t get tricked when Liverpool slow down the pace, because that allows them look for the right moment, which is very much how Dutch football likes to hurt you – giving you the feeling of the game slowing down, and then when you feel comfortable they try to score against you.
The last time they met was in the League Cup final back in February, where it finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and Liverpool went on to win 1-0 in extra time. Chelsea will be out for revenge with the chance to close the gap between the two clubs to just 1 point. #mmlove
