The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 has been played by all remaining teams and most fixtures we’re tight with just one or two goals separating each team and everything still to play for in the second legs.
One team that do have it all to do are Liverpool. It was an interesting match at Anfield as they welcomes Real Madrid, which saw them lead by two goal to nil after just 15 minutes. It was a great goal by Nunez and a goalkeeper mistake that saw Klopp’s side get an early head start, but from there it was all Real Madrid and the scoreline at the end had silenced the home fans. Liverpool allowed the intelligence of Real to outplay them
Vinicius Jr was a huge threat on the wing, and Carlo Ancelotti went as far as to say he is the most decisive player in world football today, capable of making the big difference in any game. He was too much to handle for Liverpool’s defence, scoring Real’s first two goals, and then Benzema provided another brace along with Militao’s goal to create a three-goal deficit.
Liverpool’s defence was all over the place and Real Madrid capitalised as they always do. It felt like a walkover by the end of the game and it was easy to forget this fixture was last year’s Champions League final – the last final I saw live in a stadium!
Klopp even admitted it will be very tricky to comeback from this scoreline at the Bernabeu, because Liverpool will have to take risks to score 3 goals, and Real Madrid are so strong on the counter-attack that it could lead them open to more goals. We’ve seen some crazy comebacks in the Champions League in recent years, and lets not forgot Liverpool’s comeback in the Champions League final against AC Milan in 2005. It will be interesting to see how this one goes in the second leg, and how Madrid setup to contain Liverpool.
Elsewhere the other Premier league teams all failed to win, with Man City being held to a 1-1 draw against Leipzig, and Chelsea and Spurs both suffering 1-0 defeats to Dortmund and Milan respectively. For Chelsea it will be the details that are going to be key in letting Fernandez go 1v1 with Dortmund’s fastest player Adeyami during Chelsea’s corners for example.
You would have to say everything is still to play for in those games, as well as in the clash between PSG and Bayern, although Bayern will have a 1-0 and home advantage in the second leg.
Man City will be okay with their 1-1 draw at Leipzig, still being in the tie with a home leg is never a bad situation to be in, but City’s main goal will be to get the ball to their top scorer Haaland more effectively, as his lack of involvement in the game is starting to become a problem for City in attack. Leipzig were for sure the more urgent team in the second-half and put the pressure on city but the second leg is now totally open and will hopefully be an exciting clash. #mmlove
